six reasons why you should enter
part one. connect yourself with the industry
It is hard to believe that seven years ago Appetite for Excellence began and is now going into year number eight. Rolling the program out in 2005, and rejoining in late 2008 as project director, I (Phee) have been very privileged to have met and worked with the talented chefs, waiters and restaurateurs who have been involved.
Over the years, it has been wonderful to see each of these individuals grow in their confidence and careers. Some of these professionals are making their mark in their own way from opening restaurants, to studying wine, or being involved in the industry in other ways: people such as Adam D’Sylva; Massimo Mele; James Welsh; Leanne Altmann; Hadleigh Troy; Beau Vincent; Mark Reginato; and Ben Devlin. (this is just a tip of the iceberg)
One of the most common questions I hear, is “what exactly does the program do?” And, "how does it help?" For us (the program), it is about connecting. Connecting to the industry who we are here to support and encourage. Connecting our applicants to industry knowledge. Connecting our finalists to a peer group that consider what they do a profession. Connecting our national finalists to producers. And overall, connecting everyone to the media and our partners.
Since our applications are now open, to help you as a waiter, chef or restaurateur, Christopher and I (the office) thought it would be the perfect opportunity to encourage those of you who are not sure if you should be involved, or enter, or are too shy to ask questions.
There are some fantastic reasons why you consider becoming involved. After all, the reason this program exists is to help young professionals in the industry who would like to challenge themselves in a supportive environment, and our judges are extremely supportive. They want nothing more than to see you succeed! In your career, your profession and to be ambassadors for the industry. Without the next generation, where would the hospitality be?
Starting this week, and for the next 7 weeks when our applications close, we will be sharing what others who have been involved in the program feel that was of value to them; what we do for you as the emerging talent and the industry overall.
The industry comes together each year to hear who our national finalists are, as well as hear who the winners will be at the year's most sought-after awards ceremony on Monday 20 August. Watch the footage from last year's event at the Electrolux Showcase in Sydney.
